What Matters for the future of our extraordinary region?

You may not know it, but at Greater Wellington Regional Council we touch on your lives every day. From the public transport you ride on, to the water you drink or swim in and the regional parks you explore, we are working to deliver our communities the best possible experience.

When we say we are working toward a Greater Wellington Region, we really mean it. Everything we do is to shape our region to be the very best it can be - now and into the future – but we need your help to get there. We can’t create the region you want if we don’t hear your voice.

We are working on our Long Term Plan right now, this is a really important document, we use this to prioritise our work and make sure we not only continue to provide, but improve our services for the region and the people in it.

We want to make sure that you and your families continue to have a region we can be proud of, and your input will ensure that we are making the right choices.

    We have been working to identify what we do that is most important for you living in the wellington region. We've made a list of what we think our key priorities are - what do you think?

    Our priorities for the region

    Water Supply

    The bulk water infrastructure consistently delivers high quality drinking water to the four cities.

    Freshwater Quality

    The quality of the freshwater in our rivers, lakes and streams is maintained or improved.

    Resilient infrastructure

    Core regional infrastructure is resilient in the face of adverse events (including flooding and drought). It provides essential services to our communities, and facilitates economic growth.

    Biodiversity

    Our region contains healthy plant, bird and wildlife habitats in the region

    Public transport

    We provide a high quality and reliable public transport network
    Where we will take a leadership role

    Climate change

    We will take a leadership role in reducing regional greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change

    Economic development

    This means we will take a leadership role in continuing to develop the economy of the region and look for new opportunities

    Alongside our priority areas there are other activities we do. These are:

    • Natural hazards/resilence work
    • Protecting soils and reducing erosion
    • Maintaining or improving air quality
    • Transport planning (including active transport e.g walking, cycling)
    • Working with our iwi partners
    • Looking after our regional parks and forests
    • Harbour safety
    • Healthy Homes

    In this region we have over 500,000 people who call this place home. It’s a diverse area, both in landscape and communities – we cover hillside farms, coastal baches, suburban homes and the busy, compact capital city.

    We all want to live in region with a dynamic economy, resilient infrastructure and a natural environment we can all enjoy. Our plans are about making sure that can happen.

    Every three years we update our Long Term Plan to ensure that we are still on track and that our priorities and goals are aligned with our vision of creating a Greater Wellington for all of us to live, work and play in.

    This plan is one of the ways we tell the story about our direction, the outcomes we’re planning to achieve and how they’ll impact the region, and how we plan to get there. It’s about the key issues, major projects and priorities over the next 10 years, and how they’ll be funded.

    We’re responsible for taking the lead on some of the big issues that affect us as a region, including:

    Running the public transport system – the trains, the buses, the ferries – that helps us move around. Our aim is to create an integrated public transport system that’s as good as any in the world.

    We care for the region’s water, land and air, making them safe for our everyday enjoyment and making sure they’re sustainable for the future. This means we look after the region’s water supplies, protect our biodiversity through pest and weed control, provide flood protection, and soil and water conservation.

    Our natural and cultural heritage is protected and nurtured by us through our work in regional parks, forests and tracks. We care for more than 15,000 hectares of regional parks and other public land so that you can enjoy it.

    And we provide regional leadership, looking for opportunities to promote and grow our region so we have an economically sustainable and vibrant future.

    We’re interested in your thoughts, because we have the job of looking after this region, partnering with your city or district council, central government and other agencies to make it extraordinary.
