We’re seeking to make our regional harbours safer by ensuring national consistency, reducing risk and improving safety measures on the water.

Public feedback is being sought on the proposals, which would amend the Wellington Regional Navigation and Safety Bylaws 2009. These updated bylaws establish basic foundations for water safety, so you can look after yourself and your whanau.

The proposed amendments cover a range of navigation safety bylaws which will affect all vessels, large and small. A lot of other regions across New Zealand have some of these rules in place, so it’s vital that we create a consistent approach and continue to improve our harbour safety.

Please read the proposals in the attachment. Paper copies are available if needed from Greater Wellington public offices.

Your submissions on the proposed amendments must be received by us by 5pm, 30 November 2020.

If required, a hearing will be held in March 2021. You should indicate in your submission if you wish to be heard to support your submission.

Please note that any submission you make may be publicly available under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987. If you’re making a submission as an individual, we’ll consider removing your personal contact details if you request this in your submission.

You can send your submissions by post to: The Harbourmaster; PO box 11646 or by email to harbours@gw.govt.nz
