The recent severe weather has been a challenging time for many communities, with intense rainfall leading to flooding, slips, road closures, and damage to homes, businesses, and local infrastructure. Emergency services and councils continue to work through the impacts, alongside our own Greater Wellington kaimahi, to support affected communities and manage ongoing risks.
An important part of this work is improving the flood hazard models we use to better understand flood behaviour and prepare for future events. We are collecting photos from the recent flooding so we have high‑quality, real‑world information available for future modelling work when it comes up in our programme. Images taken during and after the flooding are extremely valuable and will support long‑term flood resilience planning.
For this event, we are particularly interested in photos and videos of river related flooding in Wainuiomata and the Wairarapa.
If you have photos or information from flooding in other parts of the region, please contact your local council directly
You can share your photos using the map tool below, or email them to us.
If you choose to email your photos to floods@gw.govt.nz, please include:
The date the photo was taken
The time the photo was taken
The street address or specific location
The direction the photo was taken from
Thank you for taking the time to contribute. Your photos help us build a stronger evidence base and improve how we plan for and manage flood risk in the future.
